Jeppe Hein: Appearing Rooms

The work of Danish artist Jeppe Hein (born 1974) often combines sculpture with architecture and technology to playfully solicit the viewer's direct participation. Hein's aquatic sculpture Appearing Rooms was originally commissioned for the garden of the Villa Manin, Italy. Hein was inspired by the Baroque villa to design an ornamental fountain that visitors would be invited to enter, to interact with changing spaces created by rising and falling walls of water. Redefining traditional ideas about fountains, this public artwork explores the relationship between spatial perception and memory, presence and absence, inside and outside. As visitors walk through the 'rooms', they must carefully consider the patterns of rising and falling water if they are to leave the space without getting wet.

Donna Huddleston: Golden Hands

London-based Australian artist Donna Huddleston (born 1970) creates a number of works that relate to the venue's function as a gallery and cafe / bar, including a new apron designed for the waiting staff, cushions placed on the hard stools, embroidered napkins, reworked menu cards and floral displays. The artist's intention is to suggest a haunting of Concrete by the ghost of a cafe from an imagined future, or fantasy past.

Fresh Off The Wall

From 5-19 July, a team of artists, from collective 13:54, transform the Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer with their creative responses to the music, words and text of the London Literature Festival. Evolving from a blank canvas to display an exciting mix of textiles, graffiti, photographs, video and performance art, the work narrates the day-by-day story of the Festival as artists respond to events in real time. The collective was formed by poet and graphic designer Inua Ellams, with the intention of bringing together a group of like-minded artists who could find new ways to blur the boundaries of literature and the visual arts. Under the umbrella of Southbank Centre's Fresh Off The Page series, this exhibition brings together 11 young, emerging visual artists who are challenged and inspired by each others work, and offers an exciting opportunity to access the diverse imaginations of a new collective. Fresh Off The Wall celebrates word by exploring its visual incarnations, challenges the way literature is absorbed and enhances the experience of the London Literature Festival 2008.

The Truth About Love - A romantic journey through Mozart's operas

One of this country’s most enterprising musical organisations, the Classical Opera Company - which bewitched Mostly Mozart audiences with its ‘A - Z of Mozart Opera’ - presents an intriguing and delicious programme exploring the theme of love in Mozart’s operatic repertoire. A thrilling line-up of singers, including international stars Rebecca Evans and Garry McGee, join Ian Page and the company’s vibrant period-instrument orchestra in arias and duets from operas including La finta giardiniera, Idomeneo, The Abduction from the Harem, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, La clemenza di Tito and The Magic Flute. The Company are joined on stage by actors Zoë Wanamaker and Simon Russell Beale who will read poems by Auden, Shakespeare, Yeats and e.e.cummings. From subtler shades of emotion to barely suppressed passion, these numbers form an enchanting journey through love in many Mozartian shapes and forms. ‘Rebecca Evans’s heroine is in a class of her own: deeply musical, elegantly expressive, beyond any recent Pamina I’ve heard.’ Financial Times.

Sankai Juku

Japan’s finest exponents of Butoh dance, Sankai Juku, present two contrasting works at Sadler’s Wells. Sankai Juku create dreamlike performances which weave meticulous, spellbinding movement with breathtaking, large-scale staging in a theatrical experience quite unlike any other. Founded by Artistic Director Ushio Amagatsu in 1975, Sankai Juku has performed in more than 40 countries and 700 cities and has won countless awards, including an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, confirming their status as Japan's leading example of Butoh. Sadler’s Wells is delighted to present two contrasting works from the company’s repertoire over separate evenings. The first, Kinkan Shonen, explores a boy's dream about life and death using mystic imagery as dancers’ bodies slowly transform into a series of almost non-human shapes, and a live peacock patrols the stage. Toki, one of the Sankai Juku’s newest works, is a mesmerising example of contemporary Butoh dance. Performed by eight dancers on a stunning set that brings to mind elements of both science fiction and an ancient world. Originating in Japan in the late 1950s, Butoh is an expressionist contemporary dance form characterised by the physical appearance of the dancers with white painted faces and shaved heads, and the use of abstract, sometimes grotesque, imagery.

Savion Glover

After wowing audiences at Sadler’s Wells and receiving an Olivier Award nomination last year for his first ever UK performances, the undisputed master of tap dance Savion Glover makes a much-anticipated return. After making his Broadway debut at the tender age of 12 alongside Sammy Davis Jr, Savion Glover’s mastery of tap dance soon saw him shoot to fame. Over the years he has worked on a truly diverse range of projects, from pop videos for P Diddy to a film with Spike Lee - not to mention picking up a Tony Award along the way. Savion Glover’s unique style delivers much more than you might expect from a tap dance performance. Watching him tap out a bass rhythm with one foot and then simultaneously overlay complex riffs with the other is an awe-inspiring display of skill. His new show Bare Soundz explores jazz, Caribbean beats and more. This rare UK appearance by Savion Glover at Sadler’s Wells also features regular collaborators Marshall Davis Jr and Maurice Chestnut.
