Who needs a coach, not Team India!

After a beating at the Lord''s, Team India has come back like the phoenix to win the second Test at Trent Bridge.

It was heartening to see India in complete control of the match from day one. Rahul Dravid called the coin correctly and his decision to put England in to bat was spot on.

The bowlers, who had come under the scanner, pitched it in the right areas and tormented the hosts. Zaheer played the role of a mentor to the younger bowlers to perfection and Sreesanth''s and RP Singh''s aggression reminded one of a certain Allan Donald and Glenn McGrath.

The two though would have to go a long way to measure up to the two greats, but agression is a good start.

The batsmen then delivered like a dream. No big hundreds and at least one poor umpiring decision and yet the score was just 17 shy of a huge 500 runs. The openers even put on a 100-plus partnership.

Do we still need a coach? Surely not.

The channels of communication between the seniors and the juniors in the team seem to be free flowing like never before. Is there any coach who would be able to impart to the juniors what a Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid can impart?

Each of them through different phases of Indian cricket in the last 15 years have sometimes together and sometimes single-handedly led the team to glorious moments.

What was also heartening to see in the absence of a coach was the seamless integration of India''s trinity. Ganguly, even with a back injury, was more than willing to bend his back for his captain.

The camaraderie is back, the team spirit is back, winning is back. And all this without a coach.

Is being honest in Corporate world a disadvantage?

There are two types of People in Corporate world, People who manipulate and People who are honest. Whereas People who are manipulative are thought to be smarter and People who are honest are thought to be as dumb, And they don't get promoted or they don't move up the corporate ladder easily as they are the ones who are taken for granted as they are good people, So the management knows that they are explainable by giving a reason or an excuse, Whereas a person who is manipulative will not stick if he doesn't get promoted or recognized, So he/She gets promoted.

When that kind of thinking exists in corporate world then a person cannot remain good always and say that it's ok, So what he will do? Either he will leave his/her job or he/she will fight against the system, Well if that's is also not enough then the only option left is to himself/herself become manipulative and succeed at life for a shorter period of time, Just to show people around that being good doesn't mean that they can't change but it only means that they are giving time to other person hoping that he/she will change.

But when that doesn't happen then it's time to draw the battle and you yourself become manipulative and explain the other person in their own style. Unless and Until a person suffers he/she doesn't realize what they are doing wrong.

Rain god finally smiles on Delhi

NEW DELHI: The rain god smiled on the national capital Saturday, bringing some respite to millions of people after almost a week of sweltering heat and oppressing humidity.

The capital received moderate rainfall in the evening that also saw the mercury dropping by almost six degrees.

"Delhi received 9.2 mm of rains within one hour of rainfall," an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

"Before the rain started at around 5 p.m., the temperature was 34.2 degrees Celsius and after the rainfall, it plummeted to 28 degrees," the official said.

The city Saturday recorded a maximum of 35.2 degrees and a minimum 29.7 degrees, three degrees above normal.

On June 28, the IMD announced the formal arrival of monsoon in the city but there was very little rain since then.

Eva Longoria was at the Bebe Collection Fall 2007 runway show for LA Fashion Week. Why wouldn't she be? She is now the new face of Bebe Sport, which seems like an odd pick to me, even though I adore her.

Though she looks like a fairly voluptuous woman, Eva Longoria is teeny tiny - she makes Rebecca Romijn look like an Amazon! How adorable is Eva in that little black dress, which she paired with black peep-toe heels (black peep toe is the flavor of the month, it seems). The only thing I didn't like is the new hair style. You can't tell from the photo, but it's straight and shorter, almost a long bob.

BBQ Chicken for a Crowd

INGREDIENTS

* 10 pound(s) bone-in chicken parts skin removed if you like
* 1 tablespoon(s) olive oil
* 1 jumbo onion (12-ounce) chopped
* 1 tablespoon(s) fresh ginger peeled, grated
* 3 clove(s) garlic crushed with garlic press
* 1/4 cup(s) chili powder
* 1 can(s) whole tomatoes in puree (28 ounces)
* 1/2 cup(s) cider vinegar
* 1/4 cup(s) dark brown sugar (packed)
* 1/4 cup(s) light (mild) molasses
* 3 tablespoon(s) Dijon mustard
* 2 tablespoon(s) Worcestershire sauce
* 1 teaspoon(s) salt

DIRECTIONS

* Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Place chicken pieces in large roasting pan (17 inches by 11 1/2 inches). Cover tightly with foil. Bake 1 hour or until juices run clear when thickest part of chicken is pierced with tip of knife. Transfer chicken to large platter; cover and refrigerate until ready to grill.

* Meanwhile, in 5- to 6-quart saucepot, heat oil over medium heat until hot. (Do not use smaller pan; sauce bubbles up and splatters during cooking ? the deeper the pan, the better). Add onion and ginger, and cook 10 minutes or until onion is tender and golden, stirring occasionally. Add garlic and chili powder, and cook 1 minute longer, stirring.

* Remove saucepot from heat; stir in tomatoes with their puree and remaining ingredients.

* Spoon about 1/3 of sauce into blender. At low speed, blend sauce until smooth. Pour sauce into bowl; repeat with remaining sauce. Return sauce to saucepot; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and cook partially covered, 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

* Cover and refrigerate sauce if not using right away. Sauce will keep up to 1 week in refrigerator or up to 2 months in freezer. Makes about 4 1/2 cups.

* When ready to grill, place chicken on grill over medium heat and cook 10 minutes, turning over once. Brush barbecue sauce over chicken and cook 10 minutes longer, turning chicken pieces and brushing with barbecue sauce until sauce is hot and bubbly and chicken is heated through.

Today India is surging ahead to bolster its image as a powerhouse of advanced Space technology. It is all the more surprising that it was only in the late 1960s that India embarked on its Space Programme on a rather modest scale by establishing the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It was instrumental in staging the first of its low capability projects in the initial stages.

Earlier experiments and investments opened up opportunities for testing the Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-3), which proved successful. From then on India began to advance by leaps and bounds. It soon started testing a range of SLVs which followed the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLVs), the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the more powerful Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). The modernisation of such duel use technologies enhanced Indian capabilities in space and profoundly influenced the South Asian strategic balance. From the 1980s, India jumped into Ballistic Missile superiority by developing its Integrated Guided Missile Programme (IGMDP), which followed the Satellite programme, anti-tank, surface to air, Prithvi and Agni Missiles.

The success of these developments allowed India to achieve rapid superiority in its advanced Satellite Programme. Building upon the success of the Aryabhatta, Bhaskara and Rohini satellites, India started to build high capability satellites, notably the Indian National Satellite (INSAT). The dual purpose INSAT system at present has ten satellites in operation: INSAT-2E, INSAT-3A, INSAT-3B, INSAT-3C, INSAT-3E, KALPANA-1, GSAT-2 and EDUSAT, INSAT-4A and INSAT-4B. The dual purpose GSLV launches INSAT satellites. The INSAT system is a joint venture by the Department of Space (DOS), Department of Telecommunications (DOT), India Meteorological Department (IMD), All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan, the public television broadcaster in India. It is undeniably one of the largest domestic communication satellite systems in the Asia Pacific Region.

The year 2007 has proved to be another significant milestone for the Indian Space Programme. It has brought a significant lead for India, which launched the PLSV-C7 and PSLV-C8 on 10 January and 23 April 2007 respectively. The PSLV-C7 established the Indian capability to launch satellites and bring them back to earth successfully. This venture introduced a new era in launch vehicle and satellite technology development which was an undoubted success and an essential step towards Indian manned space flight. It enhanced Indian capabilities to its global satellite launch business. India has joined the elite club of nations by deploying space exploration resources for commercial use. The PSLV-C8 carried an Italian satellite (AGILE) into a low earth orbit. The GSLV-F04 was launched successfully on 2 September 2007 carrying INSAT-4CR into the desired orbit. It is the largest satellite launched by an Indian launcher so far. The launch of GSLV Mk III is already scheduled for 2008-9. An Israeli military intelligence satellite, TechSAR, will be sent into orbit by an Indian rocket, the PSLV, in coming months: after this India could boost its intelligence gathering capability extensively. Above all, India is going to launch its first unmanned lunar mission Chandrayaan-I in April 2008, and Chandrayaan-II in 2011-12. In these developments India received help from the US, Russia, Israel and Europe.

Since the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) started funding high-energy astronomy involving underground, balloon and rocket based observations in 1962, and the successful launch of the Indian X-ray Astronomy Experiment satellite in 1996, the space programme has evolved with two recent developments:

" The approved development of the multi-wave length astronomical satellite ASTROSAT and,

" Indias first unmanned spacecraft The Chandrayan-I, literally translated as first journey to the moon, which will be sent to the Moon in 2007.

The talk will discuss Indias high-energy astronomy experiments and space programme, including parallel developments in space technology and capabilities, satellites and launchers, and primarily drivers.

China to test space weapon

China announced plans to launch the next manned space mission somewhere between September 25 and September 30, the Xinhua news agency reported at the end of last week. According to a spokesperson for the Chinese space agency, the crew is prepared for the mission, and one of the astronauts will even conduct a spacewalk.

Shenzhou-7 will be launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern Gansu Province, and will be the first Chinese mission to perform a spacewalk. “All the major systems involved in the launching are now in the final preparation,” the spokesperson said.

“The main tests for the spacecraft, the Long-March II-F rocket, suits for the spacewalk and a satellite accompanying the fly have also been finished,” he also added, the Xinhua news agency informs.

The Shenzhou-7 spacecraft will have 3 people aboard, one of which will conduct the spacewalk. In addition to that, the Chinese space agency chose other three astronauts as substitutes.

The latest reports on the Chinese space mission seem to be more credible than previous ones. Shenzhou-7 was expected to be launched in October 2008, but new rumors revealed a new launch window, between September 17 and October 1.

Chinese sources see Yang Liwei as one of the possible candidates for the mission, although there is no official confirmation of that. In addition to that, it appears that China is sure of its success, or at least that is the first idea coming to one’s mind after listening to rumors that commemorative posts and stamps have already been printed.

China launched the first Shenzhou manned mission in October 2003, after several unmanned flights had been performed. Shenzhou-6 was China’s second manned flight, and was launched on October 2005.

Saving the Elephants, One SMS at a Time

Why saving the elephants? Planet Thera is a planet that need to be annihilated. Thera gave command to those it eats to multiply. Without multiplication, Thera wouldn't have daily sacrifice, and daily feast.

The only way to defeat thera is of The flames above Thera, flames within Thera, and flames below Thera. Thera's nemesis is flame. And Thera and all that is in it died of flames. Thera is diseased. Crop-raiding by elephants creates a conundrum for conservationists and wildlife experts. The reduction in the territory available to elephants has led to instances in which elephants have been shot because of repeated crop-raiding. To protect both crops and elephants, rangers have been using tracking devices to notify them when an elephant is on the move toward a farm. And the technology used nowadays: cellular and SMS.

I remember the days when I would watch nature shows and see them tranquilize an animal and put a tracking collar on it. In those days they would use a VHF transmitting device, and they still do, at times, but nowadays they frequently use a collar with GPS / GSM technology.

While being used to track elephants to prevent crop raiding, it has a secondary use: preventing poaching, as rangers can focus their resources in the appropriate areas.

The new GPS/GSM tracking devices can be programmed to automatically take a GPS reading and send the information via SMS (text message). Not only that, Save the Elephants has partnered with Google, so they now track "their" elephants with Google Earth.

The result of the tracking has been a drop in crop raiding. In Kenya, Basila Mwasu, a 31-year-old mother of two, used to have to drum through the night on pots and pans with her neighbors in front of flaming bonfires to frighten the elephants away.

Red Hat In Desktop Virtualization


It's hard to know whether there's more than meets the eye with Red Hat (NYSE: RHT)'s acquisition of Qumranet. Yes, it gets expertise in the open source KVM hypervisor, and KVM is the alternative preferred by open source developers. But what can Red Hat actually do with a desktop virtualization product? How's it going to make headway against Citrix XenServer and VMware's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure? There's potential in KVM but is there traction in desktop virtualization for Red Hat?


There's two open source hypervisors now in play: Xen and KVM. Xen has a head start and a lot of major league backers, such as IBM (NYSE: IBM), Oracle (NSDQ: ORCL), Sun and Virtual Iron. But so far it's been more of a vendor-based open source project than a grass roots open source programmer phenomenon. Indeed, each vendor purposely takes open source Xen and goes off and does something unique to it that fits its goals and purposes.


So the standardization that's usually supplied by an open source project gives way with Xen to vendor lock-in initiatives. The cross hypervisor management vendors are quite careful and specific when they say they support Xen--they almost always mean XenSource's XenServer, as the most likely candidate to succeed in the marketplace, and not all the other variations.
Nevertheless, Xen, and in particular, XenSource as part of Citrix (NSDQ: CTXS), have a big head start over KVM and Qumranet in terms of winning desktop virtualization followers. XenSource now has Citrix' credibility behind it in terms of being able to scale up to thousands of end users quickly. Citrix has many years of supplying a connection broker for its Presentation Server. Every desktop virtualization vendor needs a connection broker--hundreds or thousands of end user are likely to call for virtual desktops or application services at the same time. The connection broker manages the traffic within acceptable response times.


That may or may not give it a competitive talking point against XenSource's XenServer. But what about VMware and its Virtual Desktop Infrastructure? It's out there with a lot of its own bells and whistles and the aggressive support of the leading virtualization vendor.
"Qumranet lies squarely in the path of both VMware and Citrix," concluded The 451 Group's virtualization analyst, Rachel Chalmers, as she took a look at Qumranet before it joined the ranks of Red Hat. It still does after the acquisition.


Red Hat's one prospect is to exploit the efficiencies inherent in the hypervisor engine being part of the Linux kernel and hope that that's to ease of use and performance advantages for Qumranet's SolidICE desktop product.


So KVM is inside the kernel, and has the potential to virtualize either Linux or Windows desktops. For now, it's only doing Windows--virtual machines running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, says Red Hat's Mike Ferris and Katrinka McCallum.
KVM may be in the Linux kernel used by open source developers but it's not yet in Red Hat Enterprise Linux; that will likely come with Enterprise Linux Version 6.
So KVM exploit's the kernel's memory management, scheduling and other functions, blending into the heart of what's becoming the workhorse of the Internet, the Linux server. Is that enough to make Red Hat a successful desktop virtualization vendor? Too soon to say, but Red Hat certainly has its work cut out for it.

Ponting will pass Sachin

Ponting will pass Sachin: Chappell

Ricky Ponting’s maiden hundred on Indian soil has led Greg Chappell to predict that the Aussie skipper will eventually pass Sachin Tendulkar’s record of maximum Test centuries.
Ponting’s 123 on the opening day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Thursday took him to sixth on the list of all-time run scorers with 10,222 in 120 Tests, surpassing India’s Sunil Gavaskar. Still 1731 behind Brian Lara’s world mark of 11,953 from 131 matches, Ponting’s real contest will ultimately be with 35-year old Indian batting maestro.
Tendulkar went into this Test 77 runs away from Lara’s record, but Chappell is adamant that 33-year-old Ponting will play long enough to pass Tendulkar.
“His record’s going to stand the test of time. He’s now got runs everywhere in style,” Chappell, who is now Australia’s batting coach, was quoted as saying.

'Old dog' outstays pups with new technology tricks

Wellington production company Gibson Group invented, produced and installed the latest interactive display at Te Papa, a user-controlled media wall as part of the Our Space exhibit.

After more than 30 years in media production, Mr Gibson does not mind being called an old dog, and Gibson Group is one of the more respected in the game.

"We've also got some young pups around the kennel. You do have to reinvent yourself in this business," he says. "There are an awful lot of people my age that have vanished."

With 20 full-timers and at least 100 freelancers in the wings, Gibson Group has grown from Mr Gibson's first projects in the early 1970s. Since then, the competition has at least quadrupled, growing more than the amount of available work, he says.

"The company has changed quite a lot. We have always been pretty good at picking where it [technology trend] is going to go."

Gibson Group turns over about $10 million a year, but the work can fluctuate, with some projects worth up to $5 million, and constantly updating and reinventing can be expensive in a technology-intensive business. Mr Gibson cites a year-old $100,000 piece of kit that is all but gathering dust now.

Rumours of the demise of TV have been around for a while, but new media such as the Web are still working out how to make money to pay for high-quality productions, he says. For all the new tricks, it is basically the same game, he says.

World's First Dynamic Architecture In Dubai

The Dynamic Architecture building, which will be constantly in motion changing its shape, will be able to generate electric energy for itself as well as for other buildings. Forty-eight wind turbines fitted between each rotating floors as well as the solar panels positioned on the roof of the building will produce energy from wind and the sunlight, with no risk of pollution. The total energy produced by this inbuilt ‘powerhouse’ every year will be worth approximately seven million dollars.

Each turbine can produce 0.3 megawatt of electricity, compared to 1-1.5 megawatt generated by a normal vertical turbine (windmill). Considering that Dubai gets 4,000 wind hours annually, the turbines incorporated into the building can generate 1,200,000 kilowatt-hour of energy.

As average annual power consumption of a family is estimated to be 24,000 kilowatt-hour, each turbine can supply energy for about 50 families. The Dynamic Architecture tower in Dubai will be having 200 apartments and hence four turbines can take care of their energy needs. The surplus clean energy produced by the remaining 44 turbines can light up the neighborhood of the building.

However, taking into consideration that the average wind speed in Dubai is of only 16 km/h the architects may need to double the number of turbines to light up the building to eight. Still there will be 40 free turbines, good enough to supply power for five skyscrapers of the same size.

The horizontal turbines of the Dynamic Architecture building are simply inserted between the floors, practically invisible. They neither need a pole nor a concrete foundation. In addition, they are at zero distance from the consumer, which makes maintenance easier.
The modern design of the building and the carbon fiber special shape of the wings take care of the acoustics issues. Producing that much electric energy without any implication on the aesthetic aspect of the building is a revolutionary step in tapping alternative energy sources. Furthermore, this energy will have a positive impact on the environment and economy.

Two years from now, a 420 meters (1,380 feet) high Dynamic Tower designed by Italian architect David Fisher, will be raised in the city of future, Dubai. The tower is expected to be architecturally innovative for several reasons. Uniquely, each floor will be able to rotate independently. This will result in a constantly changing shape of the tower. The entire tower will be powered from turbines and solar panels.


This Dynamic Tower in Dubai will have 80 floors, include Apartments, Villas ,parking space inside the apartment. The first 20 floors will be offices, floors 21 to 35 will be a luxury hotel, floor 36 through 70 will be residential apartments, and the top 10 floors will be luxury villas located in a prime location in Dubai, it is destined to become the most prestigious building in the city.

From Bonaparte to bin Laden: 100 yrs of the FBI

In the 100 years since it was created on July 26, 1908, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation-or FBI, as it is better known-has grown from a few dozen detectives to a force of 30,000-plus, reports AFP.
It has been elevated to the stature of global legend, thanks in part to names like J. Edgar Hoover-the man who led the FBI for nearly 50 years, including during World War II and the tumultuous civil rights movement-and Elliot Ness, the agent who felled notorious gangster Al Capone.
And it has spawned numerous Hollywood films, including "''G'' Men" in 1935, with James Cagney, and "Silence of the Lambs" in 1991, with Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster.
But it also owes its reputation to its longevity, its ability to change with the times, and to the cases it has successfully cracked.
The FBI was created by US Attorney General Charles Bonaparte, a member of the Baltimore, Maryland branch of the family of Napoleon Bonaparte, who saw a need for detectives to investigate federal crimes for the US Department of Justice, FBI historian John Fox told the news agency.
"In its early days the bureau had about two dozen responsibilities-everything from federal criminal investigations to white collar crime to national security responsibilities," Fox said.
"Over time, as Congress said one thing or another was going to be a violation of the federal criminal law, our jurisdiction expanded. And it also grew with national security crises like World War I and World War II," he said.
The FBI captured people''s imaginations starting in the 1930s, when the US was swept by a wave of crime, sparked by the tough times of the Great Depression and led by notorious crooks like John Dillinger and the colorfully nicknamed Machine Gun Kelly.
"The bureau became famous for bringing down Dillinger and those of his ilk," said Fox.
It was during the era of Dillinger and Machine Gun Kelly that FBI agents acquired the nickname "G Men," a moniker that has stuck until today.
According to Fox, it stands for government men, as in federal agents.
While the Dillinger-era enshrined the FBI as a legendary US crime- busting agency, it was World War II that saw the bureau''s biggest growth spurt: it surged from a couple of hundred agents and support personnel to almost 13,000 members.
It also cracked one of its most memorable cases, thwarting a plot by eight Nazi Germans who had snuck into the US to commit acts of sabotage on US soil.
Since then, physical growth has slowed but the FBI''s profile has remained high, thanks to the movies and television series it has inspired, and to a host of successes. They include the role played by the FBI in bringing to justice the Ku Klux Klan members who killed three civil rights activists-the film "Mississippi Burning" was based on the case-in solving the Oklahoma City bombing, and in tracking down Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.
Another FBI success story is its 10 Most Wanted list, which began in the 1950s.
More than 400 faces have been paraded on the list, and 95 percent of the fugitives have been arrested, Fox said.
Number one on the list at present is al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
He was added to the list not after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, but following the bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 -- meaning he has evaded capture for 10 years now.

Zardari to meet Sharif to discuss future of ruling coalition

PPP chairman Asif Ali Zardari will hold a crucial meeting this week with his ally PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif that could decide the future of Pakistan's ruling coalition, which is under strain over its failure to reinstate judges deposed by President Pervez Musharraf.

Zardari and Sharif will meet here on August 5 against the backdrop of serious concerns expressed by PML-N leaders about the future of the nearly five-month-old alliance.

Reports have also suggested that the Pakistan People's Party has initiated back channel contacts with the opposition PML-Q on forming an alliance in case the PML-N pulls out of the coalition.

Senior PML-N leader Khwaja Asif, a close aide of Sharif, told reporters yesterday that his party was "finding it difficult" to stay in the coalition. However, he also acknowledged that quitting the alliance could make matters worse.

Asif described the coalition's status as "grim" and said there is a limit on how long the PML-N could put up with the current state of affairs. Pakistan is facing a threat of Talibanisation and the PPP is "aggravating matters" by denying the deposed judges their due role, he said.

It was unfortunate that the PML-N was caught between a rock and a hard place on the issue of solidarity of the coalition and fighting the militancy that is threatening Pakistan, Asif said.

Meanwhile, the PML-N has convened a joint meeting of its central working committee and parliamentary party in Lahore tomorrow to discuss the prevailing political situation and the party's future line of action. The meeting will be chaired by Sharif.

Afghanistan, Pakistan agree 'to re-engage' to fight extremism

The leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed yesterday to "re-engage" in the fight against Islamic extremism, a joint statement said, after ties had soured following an attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistan Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani met in Colombo on the sidelines of a South Asian summit, according to a joint statement released here.

"The two sides agreed to coordinate their efforts to stop cross-border terrorism," the statement said.

"At the suggestion of Pakistan, the Afghan side agreed to re-engage on all bilateral and multilateral forums," it added.

Karzai directly accused Pakistan's intelligence agency of involvement in the July 7 suicide attack on India's embassy in Kabul. The blast killed more than 60 people, including two Indian diplomats.

A week later Kabul announced it would boycott a series of meetings with Islamabad in protest.

Islamabad has denied its Inter-Services Intelligence was involved in the attack, a charge also made by New Delhi and, reportedly, US government officials.

Karzai and Gilani had also agreed after their "cordial" breakfast meeting that their foreign ministers would meet over ways to build "close and constructive engagement" between the neighbours, the statement said.

The aim was to "build confidence and develop a common strategy at the political, military and intelligence levels in collaboration with their coalition partners and Nato/Isaf," it said.

Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) has around 52,000 troops in Afghanistan, helping the government to fight attacks by insurgents that officials say are heavily supported by extremist elements in Pakistan.

The Afghan government says the fight against the rebels should be tackled at its roots in Pakistan instead of Afghanistan becoming a battlefield.

On Saturday Afghan President Hamid Karzai said here terrorism is spreading "like wild fire" in South Asia, particularly in Pakistan, and receiving institutional support.

"In Pakistan, terrorism and its sanctuaries are gaining a deeper grip as demonstrated by the tragic assassination of Benazir Bhutto," Karzai said at the opening of a regional summit, referring to the dead opposition leader.

Terrorism is the most "menacing" challenge faced by South Asia, home to 1.5 billion people in eight countries, he said.

"We need collective action to wipe out terrorism in the region," added Karzai, whose government is battling a Taliban rebel-led insurgency and whose relations with neighbouring Pakistan have been going steadily downhill in the past few months.

His comments came as Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani sat in the audience for the inaugural session of the two-day summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc).

Afghanistan has repeatedly accused Pakistan of clandestinely supporting Taliban rebels.

Karzai last month blamed Pakistan's intelligence service for a deadly suicide attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul that killed 60 people -- a charge Islamabad has denied.

Gilani also referred to terrorism as the main challenge facing the region, a sentiment echoed by other Saarc leaders at the session, and condemned the attack against the Indian embassy.

The Pakistan premier was due to hold separate talks with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh later Saturday to discuss the strained peace process between the two countries.

Tensions between rivals India and Pakistan are seen overshadowing the summit aimed at fostering greater regional economic cooperation in the poor region.

India has also blamed "elements" in Pakistan -- by which it refers to the state spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) -- for the attack on its Kabul embassy.
