Facebook -will it become the web

Facebook - Will it Become THE Web?

Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

News swirling around the Internet would make it seem like the only thing to report on is Facebook. While this social networking site is second only toGoogle (News - Alert) in terms of popularity on the Web – and even that placement is debatable – recent announcements from F8 today make it the company to watch even more than ever.

Early this week, TMC (News - Alert) reported on announcements by Facebook (News - Alert) CEO and creator, Mark Zuckerberg, on plans to expand social media to more outlets and the new website platform. The company’s new tools are expected to allow users to see personalized versions of other websites they visit.

According to a recent WebProNews piece, Facebook’s ultimate goal could very well be the complete absorption of the Web. With the company’s announcements at F8 today, tremendous adoption of Facebook throughout the world is the next step. The three major announcements:

1. The Open Graph

2. Social Plug-Ins

3. Graph API

It appears that Facebook believes connections are going to become the new links and will happen through what is referred to as the Open Graph. According to Zuckerberg, as quoted in WebProNews:

“Facebook has focused mostly on mapping out the part of the graph around people and their relationships. At the same time, other sites and services have been mapping out other parts of the graph so you can get relevant information about different types of things. For example, Yelp maps out the best local businesses andPandora ( News - Alert) maps out which songs are related to each other.

All of these connections are important parts of the social graph, but until now it hasn't been possible to easily share the connections you make on sites like Yelp or Pandora with your friends on Facebook. And you haven't been able to bring your friends from Facebook to share experiences on these sites or personalize them to you,” said Zuckerberg.

The social plug-ins are set to play a significant role in making connections within the Open Graph. Such plug-ins will include a “like” button for the Web, already classified as the most important of the plug-ins. This button will ensure the connection is integrated with Facebook through the Graph API. While the activity will go to the news feed, it will go to other relevant places in a specific Facebook profile.

In general terms, Facebook is paving its own way to dominate the Web and considering its popularity, sites will not hesitate to participate. With the successful launch of these initiatives, Facebook will successfully inject itself into every part of the Web possible. The Open Graph appears to be a Web on its own and while it may not become the true Web, it may in fact become the only one people will place any value on.

So, is the genius behind Facebook smart enough to project the success that will be driven by this initiative? Given the demonstrated success to this point, expect that the company will only continue to expand into new areas, designing the approach along the way. And, while these are not the only announcements at F8, they certainly will have the biggest impact.
