Check your internet speed

You can check your internet speed easily.See if you are getting what you pay for or share your results with others! This internet speed tests are completely free. This tools are used to test your Internet Connection speed. You can test both upload and download speeds. You have to understand your test results. There are a lot of things that factor into your speed test results. Download and upload speeds, latency, backbones, networks, ping times, and DNS servers.
Download: It’s a measure of how fast your connection delivers content to your computer or local area network.
Upload: It’s the measure of how fast content is delivered from your computer or local area network to others on the Internet. For businesses or power-users, download and upload speed should match or at least be very close. This is main for applications like VoIP, on-line gaming and other interactive programs. Upload speed is even more essential if you are operating a server at your location. If achieving optimal upload speed is a concern, consider Ethernet, T1 or SDSL services.
Kbps and Transfer Rate: Kbps transfer rate = kilobit per second transfer rate. There are 8 bits in a byte, so you should divide kbps by 8 to get KB/sec transfer rate. Transfer rate is speed at which data can be transmitted between devices. This is sometimes referred to as throughput. As files to download become increasingly larger, the maximum data transfer rate is most attractive.Check your Speed:

Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors Regain Profitability In 4Q

Mazda Motor Corp. (7261.TO) and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (7211.TO) Tuesday said they returned to profitability in the fiscal fourth quarter as extensive cost-cuts and solid Asian sales overpowered the strong yen.
Hoping to ride on the crest of this fortuitous state of affairs, the two auto makers added they plan to keep up this momentum this fiscal year with Mazda targeting its first annual net profit in three years and Mitsubishi aiming to more than triple its net profit.
For the January-March quarter, Mazda, in which U.S. counterpart Ford Motor Co. owns an 11% stake, posted a net profit of Y9.9 billion, reversing the Y100.4 billion net loss it posted in the same period a year earlier. The car maker also expects a net profit of Y5.00 billion for the full fiscal year, improving from the loss of Y6.48 billion that it suffered last fiscal year.
Demonstrating that it isn't reeling from the fact that capital-alliance talks with PSA Peugeot-Citroen recently broke down, Mitsubishi Motors posted a Y30.5 billion group net profit in the quarter ended March, sharply improving from the Y50.1 billion loss it registered a year earlier. The auto maker projects a net profit of Y15.00 billion this fiscal year, up from Y4.76 billion last fiscal year.
The upbeat projections from the pair, who are the first Japanese car makers to report fourth-quarter earnings, indicate the country's auto industry isn't just emerging from its worst period in recent times, it's aiming for sustainable growth by capitalizing on booming demand in emerging markets such as China.
Mazda expects sales in the U.S. and China to offset the yen's strength this fiscal year. Not to be outdone, Mitsubishi said sales in all regions including North America, Europe and Asia will grow and it will further reduce costs.
"The business environment remains severe given the yen's strength and high material prices. But we want to increase sales and profits by boosting sales volume and cutting costs," Osamu Masuko, president of Mitsubishi Motors, told a press conference.
Such encouraging earnings will likely be a sign of things to come with Honda Motor Co. releasing its results on Wednesday and Nissan Motor Co. reporting its latest earnings on May 12. Hit by large-scale recalls, Toyota Motor Corp. remains the wildcard in the bunch and it remains uncertain whether it will follow suit in reporting solid earnings when it announces its figures on May 11.
Mazda said its sales jumped 38% to Y616.0 billion in the three months ended March from Y448.0 billion, as vehicle sales in the booming Chinese market jumped 44% in the quarter while domestic vehicles sales jumped 30%. The car maker posted an operating profit of Y20.5 billion after suffering an operating loss of Y64.9 billion in the year prior.
For the current fiscal year through March, the maker of sports cars such as the MX-5 Miata convertible, expects sales to grow 4.9% to Y2.270 trillion. The car maker projects an operating profit of Y30 billion, more than triple the Y9.46 billion it racked up last fiscal year.
Also on Tuesday, the Hiroshima-based car maker outlined ambitious long-term goals, saying it aims to boost its operating profit to Y170 billion in the fiscal year through March 2016. The company seeks to lift global sales to 1.7 million vehicles by that year from the 1.19 million it sold in the last fiscal year and aims to reduce costs by Y120 billion by the targeted year from last fiscal year.
Mitsubishi Motors said its sales jumped 56% to Y493.5 billion in the three-month period from Y315.5 billion. The company logged an operating profit of Y33.7 billion, compared with an operating loss of Y16.0 billion a year earlier.
For this fiscal year, the maker of the Outlander and Pajero sports-utility vehicles expects sales to increase 31% to Y1.900 trillion and projects an operating profit of Y45 billion, more than tripling the Y13.92 billion it posted in the last fiscal year.
Hino Motors Ltd. (7205.TO) and Daihatsu Motor Co. (7262.TO), two domestic subsidiaries of Toyota who also reported their earnings on Tuesday, posted slightly more lukewarm results for last fiscal year.
Toyota's truck-making subsidiary Hino posted a net loss of Y3.01 billion in the last fiscal year, narrower than a loss of Y61.84 billion a year earlier, thanks to cost-cutting steps. Sales fell 4.3% to Y1.023 trillion from Y1.069 trillion due to sluggish sales of trucks and buses at home and abroad.
For this fiscal year, Hino expects to return to a net profit of Y10 billion and sales to grow 8.5% to Y810 billion.
Daihatsu, which focuses on making small cars, said its net profit declined 4.1% to Y21.16 billion in the last fiscal year from Y22.07 billion as its sales fell 3.5% to Y1.574 trillion from Y1.631 trillion due to sluggish domestic sales.
Daihatsu expects its net profit to fall 0.8% to Y21 billion and sales to drop 7.9% to Y1.450 trillion for the current fiscal year.
Mazda, Mitsubishi, Hino and Daihatsu report their earnings using Japanese accounting standards.

Indian iron ore export prices retreating

Indian iron ore export prices retreating
The spot prices of Indian iron fines, which have already retreated, after narrowly missing USD 200 mark during the week, may see further weakening in coming week as China Iron & Steel Association officially allowed steel mills to secure their requirements by bending to the quarterly pricing policy of Big 3.

In addition, with the announcement of export tax hike only for lumps to 15% has ended the uncertainties prevailing in the market of iron ore fines.

As per market reports Indian offers for 63/62 cargos have dropped to USD 180 per tonne to USD 182 per tonne CFR China.

Iron ore prices started to rally on March 12th 2010 and surged by 23% to 55% during this period for different grades thus reaching levels last seen in 2008. But worries over a likely tightening in the property market in China and reduced speculation by curbs on lower grade iron ore imports turned the market cautions and sent steel mills to drawing from their inventories.

With the impending gradual shift form benchmark pricing based long term contracts to spot cargos, it has become more vital for both sellers as well as buyers to precisely monitor the daily movements of iron ore spot prices to keep tab on trends and spot opportunities.

This has galvanized us to start reporting domestic prices of iron ore at Barbil & Bellary and export prices on FOB Indian port.more on steelprices-china.com

EAC adopts one laptop per child

EAC adopts one laptop per child initiative

The East African Community has partnered with the One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a nonprofit organisation, to ensure transformation in education through computer literacy.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the EAC and OLPC, the two organisations agreed to work together to promote access to laptops and connectivity– especially for the region’s underprivileged children.
The EAC Secretary General, Mr Juma Mwapachu, said it is through computer literacy that EAC countries will build on the knowledge economy.
“If you want to build a knowledge economy, you must have a computer literate population, starting from primary, secondary school children and all the way to university,” Mr Mwapachu said on Wednesday. “This is a very ambitious project for which we will partner with various people and institutions to mobilise resources required to meet our objectives by 2015.”
Mr Matt Keller, the vice president of OLPC, said: “The OLPC’s partnership with the East Africa Community represents another significant step toward a world in which every child has access to world-class education, to the world’s body of knowledge, and to each other.” He said through this initiative, children will become agents of change in their communities.
Other officials who were present during the signing of the MoU include; Dr Diodorus Kamala, the Chairperson of the EAC Council of Ministers, Tanzania’s Minister for EAC, Uganda’s First Deputy Premier Eriya Kategaya.

Dell Laptop Buyer's Guide

Dell Laptop Buyer's Guide: Inspiron R vs XPS vs Alienware

Curtesy :Pcauthority

If Dell's your brand of choice, you're faced with a lot of decisions to make. The latest model in the Dell laptop range is the new Inspiron R, which features a choice of Intel Core i3 and i5 processors, 15in and 17in screens, and a brushed metal finish in a choice of colours.
Bang for buck: Inspiron R vs Studio XPS vs Alienware
It's well worth stacking the new line up against existing models. We've taken the basic price of the top-end 15" Inspiron R - at the time of writing $1,499 from Dell's Web site - and applied it to Dell's other major laptop lines to see what that kind of money can buy you.
We've compared the base line specifications of the Inspiron R against similar Dell models in the company's Studio XPS and Alienware lines. While each purports to serve a different market niche, at the end of the day they're all Windows laptops. What differences does picking a different line really make at the same kind of price point?
Pricing is a tricky issue to pin down exactly with Dell, as it offers deals that can vary widely in value and discounts on a week-by-week basis. For that reason, we've gone with the base line systems across all choices. All prices and specifications quoted were as per Dell's own configuration utility at www.dell.com.au on the 30/4/10.
There's something to like about each of these laptops, but in a comparative sense the Inspiron R fares quite well.

The Dell Studio XPS 16
The similarly priced XPS 16's biggest claim to fame has to be the lush 15.6" 1080p-capable screen, making it a decent choice for those who want high quality video presentation, but otherwise its ordinary Core2Duo processor fares poorly.

The Dell Alienware M11x
The Alienware M11x's impresses us with the options of graphics switching to preserve battery life and a meaty 8-cell battery, but is let down by the omission of an optical drive and the fact that you're only staring at an 11.6" display screen.

Even amongst the gaming crowd that Dell's Alienware line targets, as we noted in our First Look we're not sure that's going to be enough.

The Dell Inspiron R
Dell is touting its new Inspiron R laptop range as (and we're quoting here, so forgive the marketing-speak) "a great choice for anyone who wants to easily access personal files and securely share photos and videos wirelessly. It is also the ideal mobile personal entertainment hub, offering smooth video playback, surround sound and a built-in Webcam."

For essentially the same price as its siblings, the Inspiron R sports a Core i5 processor, which isn't top of the line but should be quite adequate for most processing tasks. The same is true of the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 and 5400RPM 640GB hard drive.

One thing we did find surprising with the Inspiron R line was that, at the time of writing, we weren't able to specify much in the way of optional components. Dell's currently offering only the one processor, screen and memory choice for this particular line, so those wanting this kind of system but with a little tweaking may wish to look elsewhere.
Conclusion
Still, at the current pricing, there's a fair bit to like about the Inspiron R 15" against the XPS and M11x lines. It's got a larger screen than the M11x, a more powerful processor than either line offers and more memory to boot. At this price point, that gives it a lot of appeal

UN to buy 500,000 OLPC laptops for Palestinian children

Courtesy By Peter Sayer | Businessweek

The One Laptop Per Child Project delivered 2,100 laptops to a United Nations project in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, the largest deployment so far in a program that aims to give half a million Palestinian children access to the computers over the next three years.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) teaches 500,000 children in the West Bank and Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. OLPC has already delivered 1,500 of its XO laptops to schools in Ramallah on the West Bank.
The computers run the open-source Sugar software suite, marking a return to OLPC's roots after a flirtation with running Windows XP on its emblematic green-and-white XO laptops.
Sugar is now developed by a separate organization, Sugar Labs, which also offers versions of its Activities software for Windows, or on a bootable USB stick running on top of a Linux kernel.
Sugar Labs said that in addition to the learning activities its software already provides, existing UNRWA learning content will also be adapted. UNRWA has already begun training teachers on the new machines, it said.
