ADMISSION OF PROCEDURE Undergraduate and graduate students may name preferred colleges in their applications. For undergraduate students, an increasing number of departments practice college reallocation to ensure that the ratio between potential students and subject places available at all colleges are as uniform as possible. Students who named colleges which are over-subscribed are reallocated to under-subscribed colleges for their subjects. For the Department of Physics, college reallocation is done on a random basis after a shortlist of candidates is drawn up and before candidates are invited for interviews at the university. As a result of this, the college eventually offering a candidate a place to read a subject may not be the one he/she originally applied to.For graduate students, many colleges express a preference for candidates who will be undertaking research in an area of interest of one of its fellows.
Scholarships and financial support:
There are many opportunities for students at Oxford to receive financial help during their studies. The Oxford Opportunity Bursaries, introduced in 2006, are university-wide means-based bursaries available to any British undergraduate. With a total possible grant of £10,235 over a 3-year degree, it is the most generous bursary scheme offered by any British university.In addition, individual colleges also offer bursaries and funds to help their students. For graduate study, there are many scholarships attached to the University, available to students from all sorts of backgrounds, from the famous Rhodes Scholarships to the new Weidenfeld Scholarships.In October 2007, it was announced that Oxford would be launching a fund-raising campaign with a goal in excess of £1 billion. Of the money raised, approximately one quarter is expected to go towards student financial support.
Students successful in early examinations are rewarded by their colleges with scholarships and exhibitions, normally the result of a long-standing endowment, although when tuition fees were first abolished, the amounts of money available became purely nominal. Scholars, and exhibitioners in some colleges, are entitled to wear a more voluminous undergraduate gown; "commoners"being restricted to a short, sleeveless garment. The term "scholar" in relation to Oxbridge, therefore, had a specific meaning as well as the more general meaning of someone of outstanding academic ability. In previous times, there were "noblemen commoners" and "gentlemen commoners", but these ranks were abolished in the 19th century. "Closed" scholarships, which were accessible only to candidates who fitted specific conditions such as coming from specific schools, exist now only in name. Until 1866 one had to belong to the Church of England to receive the BA degree from Oxford, and "dissenters" were only permitted to receive the MA in 1871. Knowledge of Ancient Greek was required until 1920, and Latin until 1960. Women were admitted to degrees in 1920.

In 1876, former California Governor Leland Stanford purchased 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito for a country home and began the development of his famous Palo Alto Stock Farm. He later bought adjoining properties totaling more than 8,000 acres. The little town that was beginning to emerge near the land took the name Palo Alto (tall tree) after a giant California redwood on the bank of San Francisquito Creek. The tree itself is still there and would later become the university's symbol and centerpiece of its official seal.
The Stanford Family Leland Stanford, who grew up and studied law in New York, moved West after the gold rush and, like many of his wealthy contemporaries, made his fortune in the railroads. He was a leader of the Republican Party, governor of California and later a U.S. senator. He and Jane had one son, who died of typhoid fever in 1884 when the family was traveling in Italy. Leland Jr. was just 15. Legend has it that the grieving couple said to one another after their son's death, "the children of California shall be our children," and they quickly set about to find a lasting way to memorialize their beloved son. The Stanfords visited several great universities of the East to gather ideas. An urban legend, widely circulated on the Internet but untrue, describes the couple as poorly-dressed country bumpkins who decided to found their own university only after being rebuffed in their offer to endow a building at Harvard. They did visit Harvard's president but were well-received and given advice on starting a new university in California. From the outset they made some nontraditional choices: the university would be coeducational, in a time when most were all-male; non-denominational, when most were associated with a religious organization; and avowedly practical, producing "cultured and useful citizens" when most were concerned only with the former. The prediction of a New York newspaper that Stanford professors would "lecture in marble halls to empty benches" was quickly disproved. The first student body consisted of 559 men and women, and the original faculty of 15 was expanded to 49 for the second year. The university’s first president was David Starr Jordan, a graduate of Cornell, who left his post as president of Indiana University to join the adventure out West. The Stanfords engaged Frederick Law Olmsted, the famed landscape architect who created New York’s Central Park, to design the physical plan for the university. The collaboration was contentious, but finally resulted in an organization of quadrangles on an east-west axis. Today, as Stanford continues to expand, the university’s architects attempt to respect those original university plans.

Visitors to Stanford are often surprised by the area’s mild climate. Protected from the chilly summer coastal fog by the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west, Palo Alto enjoys summer daytime temperatures typically in the 70s and low 80s, with an occasional brief heat wave. Fall is also quite temperate. Winter daytime temperatures are usually in the 50s and 60s. Rain is rare during the summer; the “rainy season” usually begins in the late fall and continues into the spring.

Dress casually—and for the weather! Be prepared for sunny and warm days during the summer. If you’re taking a tour, it’s a good idea to bring a water bottle and a hat and/or sunscreen. You can’t go wrong with “layering” in the late fall, winter, and early spring. Some backup rain gear is advisable for November through March.

A computerized university admission test for medical students has been used in London for the first time. The pilot evaluated the feasibility of replacing the written medical college admission test (MCAT) with a computerized version.Scores from the computerized entrance exam can be processed twice as quickly as scores from the written test, and candidates preferred the computerized version, which they could complete faster.Most applicants to medical,veterinary, and health care university courses in America and Canada routinely complete the MCAT. The test is designed to test prospective students on the skills and concepts thought to be needed for a successful career in the medical profession.Ellen Julian, director of the MCAT, said, “These prerequisites include assessment of basic science concepts in biology, chemistry,and physics, as well as scientific problem solving, critical thinking, and reading and writing abilities.”Currently, 55 000 people a year take the admission test in a written form in the United States,Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. It takes a full day to complete the written exam, but results from the testing center show that computerized testing could reduce the testing time by up to two hours.Applicants also liked the ability to proceed at their own pace. British medical schools do not routinely use admission tests like the MCAT. Prospective students apply through the Universities and Colleges Admission Service and their perceived suitability for a medical career is largely based on their predicted A level results. Michael Powell, executive secretary of the Council of Heads of Medical Schools, said, “High A level grades have so far been a good predictor of who does well at medical schools. We would like to improve the selection approach and widen access to medicine to those who don’t have the highest A level grades. Application tests could complement A levels and help us identify students who are most likely to make good doctors.” The council is awaiting the results of a pilot scheme run by the University of Glasgow, which has introduced psychometric testing for all applicants to Scottish medical schools. The testing is designed to examine a candidate’s problem solving skills, communication, and abstract reasoning abilities.Students currently applying to the graduate entry programme at St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, must complete a written entrance test designed specifically for people with an undergraduate degree.The exam is based on the one developed for Australian graduate entry medical schools and tests skills in problem solving, critical thinking, knowledge, and communication skills.
