ABOUT BOLTON UNIVERSITY

Bolton is enjoying large rises in applications and a multimillion-pound development programme to match - £8m will be spent in the next two years to move all subjects to the main Deane campus in the centre of town. There are also plans for a new student union. Of the 9,000 or so students, around three-quarters are north-west natives. Perhaps it's not surprising they haven't strayed too far. Bolton itself may not be massive, but there's a rich cultural heritage and plenty to do - not to mention the fact that Manchester is just a short hop away for some real big-city life.

Fees: Currently £3,145 for all full-time undergraduate courses.

Bursaries: £320 annual bursaries to those receiving a full grant, then support on a sliding scale for those receiving partial grants, down to £70 a year. £730 annual scholarships for those who have completed a preparatory course or period of study at the university or a partner institution, irrespective of financial means.

Accommodation: University is usually able to accommodate all first-years who have requested a place in halls. Self-catering accommodation costs £60 a week.
