Magnificent men and their flying machines
Magnificent men and their flying machines took to skies at London’s 2nd annual Red Bull Flugtag. Before a crowd of 80,000 amateur aviation enthusiasts, crews of gravity-defying hopefuls launched their home made crafts from a ramp above the Serpentine in Hyde Park.
Although most of madcap machines fail to fly at all, the competition is not just judged on distance. Entrants are also rewarded for their creativity and showmanship.
This year’s winners were Team Glad Winners, led by pilot Tom Bryer, whose wood and fibreglass CG1 craft scored a whopping 57 points after soaring for 17.5 metres.
But the real joy of the Red Bull Flugtag is the eclectic mix of bizarrely constructed craft that inevitably plunge into the Serpentine’s murky waters.
