Paris (15)

Opening with a spectacular aerial shot of Paris from the heights of the Eiffel Tower, the latest offering from acclaimed director Cédric Klapisch stars Juliette Binoche and Romain Duris, and unfolds as a glorious tribute to his native city. Pierre, a professional dancer, finds himself in a dilemma when a potentially fatal heart condition forces him to quit his work. Turning to his sister for help, his illness causes him to look at himself and those around him in a new light. Soon Pierre starts to discover how much better life can be when you fear it might be leaving you behind. Using the cityscape as a magnificent backdrop, Paris is a rich, multi-layered comedy-drama which takes us on a beguiling journey of Parisian life and love.

The Truth About Love - A romantic journey through Mozart's operas

One of this country’s most enterprising musical organisations, the Classical Opera Company - which bewitched Mostly Mozart audiences with its ‘A - Z of Mozart Opera’ - presents an intriguing and delicious programme exploring the theme of love in Mozart’s operatic repertoire. A thrilling line-up of singers, including international stars Rebecca Evans and Garry McGee, join Ian Page and the company’s vibrant period-instrument orchestra in arias and duets from operas including La finta giardiniera, Idomeneo, The Abduction from the Harem, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, La clemenza di Tito and The Magic Flute. The Company are joined on stage by actors Zoë Wanamaker and Simon Russell Beale who will read poems by Auden, Shakespeare, Yeats and e.e.cummings. From subtler shades of emotion to barely suppressed passion, these numbers form an enchanting journey through love in many Mozartian shapes and forms. ‘Rebecca Evans’s heroine is in a class of her own: deeply musical, elegantly expressive, beyond any recent Pamina I’ve heard.’ Financial Times.

Garbage Warrior

Maverick eco-architect Michael Reynolds was thrown out of the American Architectural Association after various of his building experiments went wrong. Now having honed his practice, he and his teams construct futuristically beautiful ‘Earthships’ in the New Mexico desert and in disaster-relief zones; 100% self-sustaining, adobe-style houses that generate their own energy through Reynolds’ visionary methods of design using old tyres, beer bottles and clay, and whatever else inspiring is lying around. This is a portrait of a man who knows how we should live – and will make you want to join him. UK 2007 Dir. Oliver Hodge 86 min.
