This is the launch event of Blonde Roots, Bernardine Evaristo's brilliantly inventive new book. The novel is an ingenious reversal of the slave trade, in which Africans are the masters and Europeans held captive, blending historical detail with sharp characterisation. Kapka Kassabova

In her life and writing, Kapka Kassabova has travelled widely across Europe. In this event she talks about her memoir Street Without a Name in which she returns to her native Bulgaria, a country that she loves and hates in equal measure. With its newly acquired EU status this little known nation is brought to life by Kassabova's writing, which she discusses in this event.

Actor Eilon Morris and Southbank Centre Emerging Artist in Residence Camilo Tirado fuse music, performance and text, written by David Lawton, in an intimate explorationn of what it means to be free. This 20 minute piece was first performed at the 2008 Huddersfield Literature Festival. The title Rhein comes from the ancient Greek verb, meaning to flow.

Bring family and friends to explore the sights and sounds of the gamelan, the beautiful percussion orchestra from Indonesia. Comprising of gongs, metallophones and drums, the gamelan is a great way to experience group music-making. Javanese Dance Workshops

Join with Ni Made Pujawati for an introduction to Javanese dance. After learning the basic movements and techniques of Javanese female-style dance, participants will put these movements together to form the opening dance sequence of welcome dance 'Gambyong Pangkur', which they will perform to gamelan music. Prior knowledge of Javanese dance is not required, but participants are advised to wear comfortable clothes and dance barefoot. Dance workshops are limited to 20 participants on a first come-first served basis, and are open to anyone aged seven and over.

Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef

This large-scale, constantly mutating series of handmade crochets replicate the forms of natural coral. The project, organised by the Los Angeles-based Institute For Figuring is a direct response to the plight of coral reef from pollution and global warming. Fusing science and mathematics with fine art and handicraft, the reef is constantly updated by an ever-expanding group of participants from around the world. The Crafts Council in partnership with Southbank Centre.

Jeppe Hein: Appearing Rooms

The work of Danish artist Jeppe Hein (born 1974) often combines sculpture with architecture and technology to playfully solicit the viewer's direct participation. Hein's aquatic sculpture Appearing Rooms was originally commissioned for the garden of the Villa Manin, Italy. Hein was inspired by the Baroque villa to design an ornamental fountain that visitors would be invited to enter, to interact with changing spaces created by rising and falling walls of water. Redefining traditional ideas about fountains, this public artwork explores the relationship between spatial perception and memory, presence and absence, inside and outside. As visitors walk through the 'rooms', they must carefully consider the patterns of rising and falling water if they are to leave the space without getting wet.

Fresh Off The Wall

From 5-19 July, a team of artists, from collective 13:54, transform the Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer with their creative responses to the music, words and text of the London Literature Festival. Evolving from a blank canvas to display an exciting mix of textiles, graffiti, photographs, video and performance art, the work narrates the day-by-day story of the Festival as artists respond to events in real time. The collective was formed by poet and graphic designer Inua Ellams, with the intention of bringing together a group of like-minded artists who could find new ways to blur the boundaries of literature and the visual arts. Under the umbrella of Southbank Centre's Fresh Off The Page series, this exhibition brings together 11 young, emerging visual artists who are challenged and inspired by each others work, and offers an exciting opportunity to access the diverse imaginations of a new collective. Fresh Off The Wall celebrates word by exploring its visual incarnations, challenges the way literature is absorbed and enhances the experience of the London Literature Festival 2008.

Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef

This large-scale, constantly mutating series of handmade crochets replicate the forms of natural coral. The project, organised by the Los Angeles-based Institute For Figuring is a direct response to the plight of coral reef from pollution and global warming. Fusing science and mathematics with fine art and handicraft, the reef is constantly updated by an ever-expanding group of participants from around the world. The Crafts Council in partnership with Southbank Centre.

Jeppe Hein: Appearing Rooms

The work of Danish artist Jeppe Hein (born 1974) often combines sculpture with architecture and technology to playfully solicit the viewer's direct participation. Hein's aquatic sculpture Appearing Rooms was originally commissioned for the garden of the Villa Manin, Italy. Hein was inspired by the Baroque villa to design an ornamental fountain that visitors would be invited to enter, to interact with changing spaces created by rising and falling walls of water. Redefining traditional ideas about fountains, this public artwork explores the relationship between spatial perception and memory, presence and absence, inside and outside. As visitors walk through the 'rooms', they must carefully consider the patterns of rising and falling water if they are to leave the space without getting wet.

The Truth About Love - A romantic journey through Mozart's operas

One of this country’s most enterprising musical organisations, the Classical Opera Company - which bewitched Mostly Mozart audiences with its ‘A - Z of Mozart Opera’ - presents an intriguing and delicious programme exploring the theme of love in Mozart’s operatic repertoire. A thrilling line-up of singers, including international stars Rebecca Evans and Garry McGee, join Ian Page and the company’s vibrant period-instrument orchestra in arias and duets from operas including La finta giardiniera, Idomeneo, The Abduction from the Harem, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, La clemenza di Tito and The Magic Flute. The Company are joined on stage by actors Zoë Wanamaker and Simon Russell Beale who will read poems by Auden, Shakespeare, Yeats and e.e.cummings. These performances of the acclaimed I Am Falling mark the start of an exciting new partnership which sees the Gate Theatre present dance theatre work at Sadler's Wells. Originally staged at The Gate Theatre in January 2008, I Am Falling effortlessly blends dance and text to tell a story which is at once shocking and tender, harrowing but beautiful. Commissioned by Sadler's Wells, this brand new work is set to an elegiac and evocative score, by internationally-renowned composer Howard Goodall. Sung live by Clerks of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and Finchley Children’s Music Group, and accompanied by Rambert's associate orchestra, London Musici, Eternal Light makes its London debut this autumn. Other work to be presented alongside Eternal Light includes two new solos choreographed by Rambert dancers plus Infinity by Australian Dance Theatre Artistic Director, Garry Stewart. Described by The Independent on Sunday as "literally like nothing on Earth", Infinity is a firm audience favourite and a spectacular finale to an engrossing and entertaining evening of dance. Christopher Bruce's highly acclaimed Swansong returns for two matinee performances only. Rambert Dance Company is appearing with its Associate Orchestra London Music.

Independent Opera at Sadler's Wells

Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells presents Debussy’s masterpiece, Pelléas et Mélisande, in a newly commissioned 35-piece chamber orchestration by composer Stephen McNeff. The intimate atmosphere of the Lilian Baylis Studio is the perfect setting in which to evoke the mysterious kingdom of Allemonde, and portray the subtle undercurrents and tensions that run deep in the human psyche. The new production is conducted by Dominic Wheeler and features Andrew Foster-Williams (Golaud), Thorbjørn Gulbrandsøy (Pelléas) and Delphine Gillot (Mélisande). The creative team behind the success of last year’s Elizabeth Maconchy double-bill returns with Alessandro Talevi (director), Madeleine Boyd (designer) and Matthew Haskins (lighting).

British Youth Opera returns to Sadler ' s Wells alongside Southbank Sinfonia with more of the UK ' s very best emerging operatic talent in two new productions. This September, the company stages two fascinating and very different operas. Puccini ' s bittersweet romantic comedy La Rondine is set in Paris during the Belle �poque. Performed to music of exceptional lyrical beauty, it tells the story of two pairs of lovers as they deal with affairs of the heart, commitment and renunciation.Jonathan Dove ' s hugely successful modern masterpiece, Flight, first performed in 1998, receives its first London performances by British Youth Opera. Set in a busy airport and inspired by a true story, the opera presents a group of people whose lives happen to intersect on one particular day. Their interactions and relationships are illuminated by Dove ' s pulsating and thrillingly colourful score.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s legendary dance company Rosas returns to Sadler’s Wells with an evening of work set to the music of composer Steve Reich. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has been a leading light in contemporary dance in Europe for more than 20 years, while Steve Reich, a pioneer of minimalist music, has been described as America’s greatest living composer. Here, Rosas presents an evening of dance devoted to Steve Reich’s music, featuring two existing pieces of dance and two new works. The first of two new works is Four Organs, set to Steve Reich’s controversial composition created in 1970 for four Hammond organs. The second, Eight Lines, is danced to Steve Reich’s piece of the same name for two pianos plus wood and strings. Completing the programme is the classic Piano Phase, which sees Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s choreography stripped down to its bare bones, as the dancers’ deft movements mirror the tight phrases of Steve Reich’s music. Drumming – Part 1 is another celebrated work in which Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s powerful, energetic choreography is once again partnered perfectly with Steve Reich’s definitive style as 13 dancers move to the beat of four live percussionists. Steve Reich’s score will be brought bursting to life on stage by the acclaimed music group Ictus.
