Javanese Dance Workshops

Join with Ni Made Pujawati for an introduction to Javanese dance. After learning the basic movements and techniques of Javanese female-style dance, participants will put these movements together to form the opening dance sequence of welcome dance 'Gambyong Pangkur', which they will perform to gamelan music. Prior knowledge of Javanese dance is not required, but participants are advised to wear comfortable clothes and dance barefoot. Sankai Juku

Japan’s finest exponents of Butoh dance, Sankai Juku, present two contrasting works at Sadler’s Wells. Sankai Juku create dreamlike performances which weave meticulous, spellbinding movement with breathtaking, large-scale staging in a theatrical experience quite unlike any other. Founded by Artistic Director Ushio Amagatsu in 1975, Sankai Juku has performed in more than 40 countries and 700 cities and has won countless awards, including an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, confirming their status as Japan's leading example of Butoh. Sadler’s Wells is delighted to present two contrasting works from the company’s repertoire over separate evenings. The first, Kinkan Shonen, explores a boy's dream about life and death using mystic imagery as dancers’ bodies slowly transform into a series of almost non-human shapes, and a live peacock patrols the stage. Toki, one of the Sankai Juku’s newest works, is a mesmerising example of contemporary Butoh dance. Performed by eight dancers on a stunning set that brings to mind elements of both science fiction and an ancient world. Originating in Japan in the late 1950s, Butoh is an expressionist contemporary dance form characterised by the physical appearance of the dancers with white painted faces and shaved heads, and the use of abstract, sometimes grotesque, imagery.

Sankai Juku

Japan’s finest exponents of Butoh dance, Sankai Juku, present two contrasting works at Sadler’s Wells. Sankai Juku create dreamlike performances which weave meticulous, spellbinding movement with breathtaking, large-scale staging in a theatrical experience quite unlike any other. Founded by Artistic Director Ushio Amagatsu in 1975, Sankai Juku has performed in more than 40 countries and 700 cities and has won countless awards, including an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, confirming their status as Japan's leading example of Butoh. Sadler’s Wells is delighted to present two contrasting works from the company’s repertoire over separate evenings. The first, Kinkan Shonen, explores a boy's dream about life and death using mystic imagery as dancers’ bodies slowly transform into a series of almost non-human shapes, and a live peacock patrols the stage. Toki, one of the Sankai Juku’s newest works, is a mesmerising example of contemporary Butoh dance. Performed by eight dancers on a stunning set that brings to mind elements of both science fiction and an ancient world. Originating in Japan in the late 1950s, Butoh is an expressionist contemporary dance form characterised by the physical appearance of the dancers with white painted faces and shaved heads, and the use of abstract, sometimes grotesque, imagery.

The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet toured the world for many years under the name of the Kirov. Now Sadler's Wells is delighted to host this world famous company for the first time in the theatre's history. Launching Sadler's Wells' Focus on Forsythe 08/09, the ballet company presents a programme of seminal works by William Forsythe. Pierrot Lunaire was choreographed on Mariinsky prima ballerina Diana Vishneva, who dances this role again in London. The evening is completed by two of George Balanchine's timeless works - Apollo and The Prodigal Son – set to scores by two of the 20th Century's greatest Russian composers, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev.

The Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera

To mark the centenary this year of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), Artistic Director Valery Gergiev brings The Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera's exquisite production of Rimsky's fairytale opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan to Sadler's Wells. The Tale of Tsar Saltan, based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin, was composed in 1900 as a centenary tribute to Russia's great poet. It was the first opera to be performed in Moscow in the 20th Century and, appropriately enough, Sadler’s Wells presented its UK premiere in 1933. This production was created in 2005, using opulent costumes and lavish sets based on the original fairytale sketches of Ivan Bilibin designed for the Russian premiere. The opera, featuring many of the company’s most outstanding young artists, includes characters such as the Swan Princess and the evil sorcerer Chernomor, plus the famous orchestral highlight Flight of the Bumblebee. This visit of the Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera and Ballet is presented in association with The Mariinsky Theatre Trust (UK).

Focusing on issues of communication and human relationships and featuring a cast of five performers who each represent a member of his own family, Aphasiadisiac sees Ted Stoffer exploring the private languages and politics of love. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s legendary dance company Rosas returns to Sadler’s Wells with an evening of work set to the music of composer Steve Reich. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has been a leading light in contemporary dance in Europe for more than 20 years, while Steve Reich, a pioneer of minimalist music, has been described as America’s greatest living composer. Here, Rosas presents an evening of dance devoted to Steve Reich’s music, featuring two existing pieces of dance and two new works. The first of two new works is Four Organs, set to Steve Reich’s controversial composition created in 1970 for four Hammond organs. The second, Eight Lines, is danced to Steve Reich’s piece of the same name for two pianos plus wood and strings. Completing the programme is the classic Piano Phase, which sees Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s choreography stripped down to its bare bones, as the dancers’ deft movements mirror the tight phrases of Steve Reich’s music. Drumming – Part 1 is another celebrated work in which Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s powerful, energetic choreography is once again partnered perfectly with Steve Reich’s definitive style as 13 dancers move to the beat of four live percussionists. Steve Reich’s score will be brought bursting to life on stage by the acclaimed music group Ictus.

Sadler’s Wells Guest Resident Company Morphoses / The Wheeldon Company made their UK debut last year to critical acclaim. Founded by Christopher Wheeldon in 2007 as the world’s first transatlantic ballet company, with a base at both Sadler’s Wells and New York City Center, the company has garnered praise across the world – receiving a South Bank Show Award in 2008.

British Youth Opera

British Youth Opera returns to Sadler ' s Wells alongside Southbank Sinfonia with more of the UK ' s very best emerging operatic talent in two new productions. This September, the company stages two fascinating and very different operas. Puccini ' s bittersweet romantic comedy La Rondine is set in Paris during the Belle �poque. Performed to music of exceptional lyrical beauty, it tells the story of two pairs of lovers as they deal with affairs of the heart, commitment and renunciation.Jonathan Dove ' s hugely successful modern masterpiece, Flight, first performed in 1998, receives its first London performances by British Youth Opera. Set in a busy airport and inspired by a true story, the opera presents a group of people whose lives happen to intersect on one particular day. Their interactions and relationships are illuminated by Dove ' s pulsating and thrillingly colourful score.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker Rosas

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s legendary dance company Rosas returns to Sadler’s Wells with an evening of work set to the music of composer Steve Reich. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has been a leading light in contemporary dance in Europe for more than 20 years, while Steve Reich, a pioneer of minimalist music, has been described as America’s greatest living composer. Here, Rosas presents an evening of dance devoted to Steve Reich’s music, featuring two existing pieces of dance and two new works. The first of two new works is Four Organs, set to Steve Reich’s controversial composition created in 1970 for four Hammond organs. The second, Eight Lines, is danced to Steve Reich’s piece of the same name for two pianos plus wood and strings. Completing the programme is the classic Piano Phase, which sees Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s choreography stripped down to its bare bones, as the dancers’ deft movements mirror the tight phrases of Steve Reich’s music. Drumming – Part 1 is another celebrated work in which Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s powerful, energetic choreography is once again partnered perfectly with Steve Reich’s definitive style as 13 dancers move to the beat of four live percussionists. Steve Reich’s score will be brought bursting to life on stage by the acclaimed music group Ictus.

Ballet Level 1

These fun and informal classes are suitable for people with limited experience or dancers returning after a long break. A relaxed and enjoyable class focussing on good use of posture and technique - combined with its practice in the sheer pleasure of classical ballet.

Teacher's Biography
I started ballet at an early age. I attended Elmhurst Ballet School and completed my training at Rambert School of Ballet - then situated at the Mercury Theatre in Notting Hill. My professional career was spent in Germany - with the ballet companies at the Lubeck Stadtstheater and Hannover Staatstheater - which involved dancing in a varied repetoire of traditional ballets - operas - and musicals. On returning to England I attended the Professional Dancer's Teaching Course at the Royal Academy of Ballet - and on completion I taught at the Hammond School in Chester. In order to study further - I returned to London and was invited to join the staff of Laine Theatre Arts. During this time I gained my Licentiate Teaching Certificate. I have worked as a guest teacher at the Cecchetti Centre and for the Cecchetti Scholars - and gave a lecture/demonstration at the annual ISTD Congress. After a break to focus on family life - I am currently teaching for the Diana Vere School of Ballet and I am also a Ballet tutor for the Youth Dance Academy at Swindon Dance.

Katja teaches a dynamic Graham-based technique class. Focus is on breath work, gaining strength, and increasing body awareness and dynamic range through imagery. The class will draw on her experience in experimental anatomy. Katja's class aims to also develop musicality and confidence through moving, allowing space for enjoyment and creativity.

Teacher's Biography
Katja gained her initial dance experience in Finland before continuing her training at LABAN. She graduated with BA degree in 2005 and MA in Dance Performance in 2007. Currently, Katja teaches release technique at LABAN and lectures part time at Roehampton University. She has worked with a variety of choreographers and companies including Korsnes Kompani, MIKS, Transitions Dance Company, Thomas Hauert, Athina Vahla and Vera Nevanlinna, and has performed and taught throughout the UK and abroad. Katja is also co-creator of collaborative project Cupboarddances. Her current research interests are: the perceived and embodied spatiality in performance, Choreological studies and Laban Movement Analysis.

These classes are left open to all levels of ability. Feldenkrais is a method for learning and self-development centred around movement. Led only by vocal instructions from the teacher, participants will explore sequences of movement connected to functional themes, such as turning, folding, extending and walking. You will learn to tune into internal sensations and in doing so discover new and more efficient ways of moving. By the end of the course participants will move more freely with greater ease and grace and see improvments in posture, balance and co-ordination.

This class introduces you to the basics of contemporary dance and is suitable for complete beginners. Enjoy taking your first dance steps in these relaxed and informative classes. Cai will lead you in a release-based class using imagery and breath to improve fluidity enabling you to develop an understanding of the efficient release of energy when moving. The course will combine set material with improvisational structures.

Cai Tomos studied dance at Coventry University he then went on to become a performer with Earthfall Physical Theatre and toured the UK and Europe. Cai has worked as a choreographer/director with both Earthfall and Diversions Dance Company and is co-founder of the Uru-Wales Project, a collaborative project with Director Martin Inthamossou that takes place in Montevideo South America.

Cai was recently awarded a creative Wales award by the Arts Council to develop his own work and is currently working as an independent artist. Cai has extensive teaching experience and regularly teaches contemporary technique throughout London and Wales.
