Join with Ni Made Pujawati for an introduction to Javanese dance. After learning the basic movements and techniques of Javanese female-style dance, participants will put these movements together to form the opening dance sequence of welcome dance 'Gambyong Pangkur', which they will perform to gamelan music. Prior knowledge of Javanese dance is not required, but participants are advised to wear comfortable clothes and dance barefoot. The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet

The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet toured the world for many years under the name of the Kirov. Now Sadler's Wells is delighted to host this world famous company for the first time in the theatre's history. Launching Sadler's Wells' Focus on Forsythe 08/09, the ballet company presents a programme of seminal works by William Forsythe. Steptext, set to Bach's Chaconne, is a series of duets performed by one woman and three men. Approximate Sonata combines five pas de deux with a thrilling score by Thom Willems. The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude is Forsythe's playful twist on the classical style, as the tutu-clad ballerinas move with fearsome velocity. Completing the Forsythe repertoire is the magnificent In the middle, somewhat elevated. The second programme features the UK premiere of Alexei Ratmansky's Pierrot Lunaire, presented at New York City Center earlier in 2008. Pierrot Lunaire was choreographed on Mariinsky prima ballerina Diana Vishneva, who dances this role again in London. The evening is completed by two of George Balanchine's timeless works - Apollo and The Prodigal Son – set to scores by two of the 20th Century's greatest Russian composers, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev.

The Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera

To mark the centenary this year of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), Artistic Director Valery Gergiev brings The Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera's exquisite production of Rimsky's fairytale opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan to Sadler's Wells. The Tale of Tsar Saltan, based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin, was composed in 1900 as a centenary tribute to Russia's great poet. It was the first opera to be performed in Moscow in the 20th Century and, appropriately enough, Sadler’s Wells presented its UK premiere in 1933. This production was created in 2005, using opulent costumes and lavish sets based on the original fairytale sketches of Ivan Bilibin designed for the Russian premiere. The opera, featuring many of the company’s most outstanding young artists, includes characters such as the Swan Princess and the evil sorcerer Chernomor, plus the famous orchestral highlight Flight of the Bumblebee. This visit of the Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera and Ballet is presented in association with The Mariinsky Theatre Trust (UK).

Les Ballets C. de la B. return to Sadler’s Wells with Aphasiadisiac – the final instalment in a trilogy of work by guest choreographer Ted Stoffer. Based in Ghent, Belgium, Les Ballets C. de la B. is a collective of choreographers renowned for presenting powerful, theatrical performances of startling, anarchic beauty. American-born Ted Stoffer, a former Rambert dancer and founder of Aphasia Dance Company, derived the title Aphasiadisiac from ‘aphasia’ (the inability to express or understand thought in spoken or written words) and ‘aphrodisiac’ (arousing the mood of sexual excitement). The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet

The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet toured the world for many years under the name of the Kirov. Now Sadler's Wells is delighted to host this world famous company for the first time in the theatre's history. Launching Sadler's Wells' Focus on Forsythe 08/09, the ballet company presents a programme of seminal works by William Forsythe. Steptext, set to Bach's Chaconne, is a series of duets performed by one woman and three men. Approximate Sonata combines five pas de deux with a thrilling score by Thom Willems. The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude is Forsythe's playful twist on the classical style, as the tutu-clad ballerinas move with fearsome velocity. Completing the Forsythe repertoire is the magnificent In the middle, somewhat elevated. The second programme features the UK premiere of Alexei Ratmansky's Pierrot Lunaire, presented at New York City Center earlier in 2008. Pierrot Lunaire was choreographed on Mariinsky prima ballerina Diana Vishneva, who dances this role again in London. The evening is completed by two of George Balanchine's timeless works - Apollo and The Prodigal Son – set to scores by two of the 20th Century's greatest Russian composers, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev.

The Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera

To mark the centenary this year of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), Artistic Director Valery Gergiev brings The Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera's exquisite production of Rimsky's fairytale opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan to Sadler's Wells. The Tale of Tsar Saltan, based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin, was composed in 1900 as a centenary tribute to Russia's great poet. It was the first opera to be performed in Moscow in the 20th Century and, appropriately enough, Sadler’s Wells presented its UK premiere in 1933. This production was created in 2005, using opulent costumes and lavish sets based on the original fairytale sketches of Ivan Bilibin designed for the Russian premiere. The opera, featuring many of the company’s most outstanding young artists, includes characters such as the Swan Princess and the evil sorcerer Chernomor, plus the famous orchestral highlight Flight of the Bumblebee. This visit of the Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera and Ballet is presented in association with The Mariinsky Theatre Trust (UK).

Live Screen is a unique evening of dance in the form of film, video and performance in the Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler’s Wells. The sixth Live Screen has a London theme, inspired by the recently-discovered 1970s film Victoria Etcetera by graphic designer Germano Facetti and photographer Paolo Gori. A unique meditation on London's Victorian and Imperial legacies, the film merges photos and graphics of public sculpture and Gustave Doré's celebrated engravings of Victorian life, creating a rich mix of photography, print, sound and spoken word. Also exploring a London theme will be Alex Reuben, a dance filmmaker and former DJ who presented a screening of his superb dance road movie Routes at Sadler’s Wells last year. Alex Reuben will show the first glimpses of his new film project, Streets of London, which explores an idea he calls 'choreogeography'. Each screening will be linked by performances of folk music written about London, sung by Lauren McCormide and Emily Portman. Live Screen will also be linked directly with the commissioned visual art displayed in the foyers of Sadler's Wells, where Nelson Crespo investigates ideas of reproduction, memory and the city through print and collage.

The Trocks are back in town with their unique brand of ballet! Dancing a fine line between high art and high camp, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo return to the Peacock Theatre by popular demand after two hugely successfully runs in 2006. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo have become a worldwide institution since their inception in 1974, winning the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Outstanding Classical Repertoire and the TMA Theatre Award for their 2006 performances at the Peacock Theatre. Dancers including Sveltlana Lofatkina, Ida Nevasayneva and Olga Supphozova present two programmes which display their extraordinary technical prowess…in size twelve pointe shoes! Programme One includes the show-stopping Swan Lake, and two works never before seen in London. For Programme Two, the Trocks present Vivaldi Suite, last performed in 1998, and Giselle (Act 2), plus the UK premiere of the underwater scene from the charming Little Humpback Horse. As the darlings of the ballet world, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo combine a loving knowledge of classical ballet with a wicked sense of fun, displaying a startling mastery of technique that will appeal to dance aficionados and complete novices alike. The Peacock Theatre is Sadler’s Wells’ home in the West End.

These performances by Emanuel Gat Dance are the first in a series of Sadler ' s Wells Debuts - an initiative designed to introduce dance by new choreographers to the UK at a special low price.Founded in Tel Aviv in 2004, and now based in France, Emanuel Gat Dance is renowned for creating visually alluring choreography, brimming with passion and drama. Here the company presents three works at Sadler ' s Wells, including one UK premiere.Co-produced by Sadler ' s Wells, Silent Ballet is a brand new work to be performed by the full company, which mixes live and pre-recorded sounds with moments of complete silence.A hit at Sadler ' s Wells Sampled in 2007, Winter Voyage is a stunning duet set to Schubert's Winterreise. Shaven haired and dressed in long flowing gowns, dancers Emanuel Gat and Roy Assaf perform with astonishing synchronicity, creating rhythmic, flowing movements that are at once masculine and elegant.Created in 2007, Through the Centre is performed by eight dancers from Emanuel Gat Dance, and set to the frantic electronic acid beats of Squarepusher.
