Richard Alston
This year, Richard Alston celebrates both his sixtieth birthday and forty years of choreography with a special programme, which includes two world premieres at Sadler’s Wells and a new work created earlier in 2008 that has never been performed in London. The Men In My Life is a celebration of the remarkable work that Richard Alston has made for male dancers. The programme ranges from an early solo, Strider (1971), through to choreography originally made for such outstanding dancers as Michael Clark, Darshan Singh Bhuller and Martin Lawrance, right up to the latest dances for Jonathan Goddard, nominated this year for the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance. The programme also features the world premiere of Richard Alston’s Blow Over, co-commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and Dance Umbrella, and set to the racing pace of Philip Glass’s Songs From Liquid Days; and new to London, Shuffle It Right, inspired by the idiosyncratic and jazzy songs of Hoagy Carmichael.

The Australian Ballet Bangarra Dance Theatre
The Australian Ballet joins forces with Bangarra Dance Theatre to present the UK premiere of two works at Sadler’s Wells. For over four decades, The Australian Ballet has been the defining face of ballet in Australia, renowned for its dynamic mix of classical and contemporary dance. Here the company presents two contrasting works - Rites, a groundbreaking collaboration with Bangarra Dance Theatre, who thrilled audiences at Sadler’s Wells in 2006 with their remarkable fusion of contemporary dance and Aboriginal culture, and The Australian Ballet’s critically acclaimed Les Présages. Rites, set to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and choreographed by Bangarra’s Artistic Director Stephen Page, is a visually stunning production which pairs dancers from The Australian Ballet and Bangarra Dance Theatre in an electrifying meeting of indigenous Australian culture and contemporary Western dance.

Momix
American company Momix returns to the Peacock Theatre to delight audiences with artistic director Moses Pendleton’s fascinating other-worldly dance creation Lunar Sea. Step into another world where figures glow eerily as they float through the darkness – combining props, light and shadow, Momix’s Lunar Sea is a “black and white ballet” in which dancers in fluorescent costumes float and fly magically, unbound by the laws of gravity. Presented under black light and featuring projections and puppets by Michael Curry (part of the Lion King design team), Moses Pendleton’s surreal world of dance and optical illusion is an exceptionally inventive production that will enthral all ages. You’ll leave the theatre with just one question: how on earth did they do that?

Live Screen
Live Screen is a unique evening of dance in the form of film, video and performance in the Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler’s Wells. The sixth Live Screen has a London theme, inspired by the recently-discovered 1970s film Victoria Etcetera by graphic designer Germano Facetti and photographer Paolo Gori. A unique meditation on London's Victorian and Imperial legacies, the film merges photos and graphics of public sculpture and Gustave Doré's celebrated engravings of Victorian life, creating a rich mix of photography, print, sound and spoken word. Also exploring a London theme will be Alex Reuben, a dance filmmaker and former DJ who presented a screening of his superb dance road movie Routes at Sadler’s Wells last year. Alex Reuben will show the first glimpses of his new film project, Streets of London, which explores an idea he calls 'choreogeography'. Each screening will be linked by performances of folk music written about London, sung by Lauren McCormide and Emily Portman. Live Screen will also be linked directly with the commissioned visual art displayed in the foyers of Sadler's Wells, where Nelson Crespo investigates ideas of reproduction, memory and the city through print and collage.
