Carrie Cracknell and Anna Williams

These performances of the acclaimed I Am Falling mark the start of an exciting new partnership which sees the Gate Theatre present dance theatre work at Sadler's Wells. Originally staged at The Gate Theatre in January 2008, I Am Falling effortlessly blends dance and text to tell a story which is at once shocking and tender, harrowing but beautiful. It explores the extremes of human emotion and the damage that can be caused by loving too much. Director Carrie Cracknell uses lighting and sound to zoom in and out of the action, leading the audience’s attention like a film camera. The narrative is presented from varying angles, allowing the characters’ stories to unfold from different perspectives simultaneously. Sadler’s Wells is delighted to offer audiences another chance to experience this unique show, which features choreography by Anna Williams and text by Jenny Worton. The remarkable on-stage world is created by Garance Marneur, with lighting by Katharine Williams and sound by Edward Lewis.

Royal Ballet of Flanders

William Forsythe’s Impressing the Czar is presented by Royal Ballet of Flanders for the first time in London at Sadler’s Wells, after receiving rapturous praise at the Edinburgh Festival in 2007. Presented in three acts with no narrative, Impressing the Czar is an intricate and surreal meditation on dance, civilisation and the human spirit, by turns both bitingly funny and deeply touching. In an inventory of references that spans the history of art and ballet since the Renaissance, Forsythe stimulates, demolishes and subsequently resurrects the dance pantheon in a whirl of theatrical imagination. Moments of opulent burlesque action are interwoven with a striking scene which features Forsythe’s world-famous in the middle, somewhat elevated. Features sumptuous designs by Férial Münnich and Michael Simon, and music by Thom Willems, Leslie Stuck, Eva Crossman-Hecht and Ludwig van Beethoven. These performances by Royal Ballet of Flanders are part of Sadlers Wells’ Focus on Forsythe 08/09.

Rambert Dance Company

Artistic Director Mark Baldwin presents his second major work for Rambert Dance Company following the critically acclaimed Constant Speed in 2005. One of the Company's most ambitious collaborations in recent years, Eternal Light is a powerfully beautiful and life-affirming celebration. Commissioned by Sadler's Wells, this brand new work is set to an elegiac and evocative score, by internationally-renowned composer Howard Goodall. Sung live by Clerks of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and Finchley Children’s Music Group, and accompanied by Rambert's associate orchestra, London Musici, Eternal Light makes its London debut this autumn. Other work to be presented alongside Eternal Light includes two new solos choreographed by Rambert dancers plus Infinity by Australian Dance Theatre Artistic Director, Garry Stewart. Described by The Independent on Sunday as "literally like nothing on Earth", Infinity is a firm audience favourite and a spectacular finale to an engrossing and entertaining evening of dance. Christopher Bruce's highly acclaimed Swansong returns for two matinee performances only. Rambert Dance Company is appearing with its Associate Orchestra London Music.

Independent Opera at Sadler's Wells

Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells presents Debussy’s masterpiece, Pelléas et Mélisande, in a newly commissioned 35-piece chamber orchestration by composer Stephen McNeff. The intimate atmosphere of the Lilian Baylis Studio is the perfect setting in which to evoke the mysterious kingdom of Allemonde, and portray the subtle undercurrents and tensions that run deep in the human psyche. The new production is conducted by Dominic Wheeler and features Andrew Foster-Williams (Golaud), Thorbjørn Gulbrandsøy (Pelléas) and Delphine Gillot (Mélisande). The creative team behind the success of last year’s Elizabeth Maconchy double-bill returns with Alessandro Talevi (director), Madeleine Boyd (designer) and Matthew Haskins (lighting).
